I stared at the small fire that lit the darkness. According to Tara, we’d be at the canyon in the morning.

I really didn’t know what my objective was exactly. My children wouldn’t be there.

Adam was being carted off to the south and Anna had fled to the north.

How did you choose which child was more important to save?

Did you assume the defense of the female came first, or was it possible that Anna was in less danger than Adam?

If she was in more danger than I intended to go after her. But the decision of turning my back on my son’s known plight tore my heart right out of me.

The real problem was I simply didn’t know. Was Anna even alive?

If she wasn’t, then that meant I should go after Adam. But again, I didn’t know.

God wasn’t answering me. Why didn’t He answer me?

Why had He brought my children here to this land of danger?

This had been meant to be my final quest and resting place.

Why should they find an early grave here before even I did? Why must they be tortured?

I never wanted anything of the kind for them and yet my son was apparently a hero now. How?

When had that happened?

Anna, shy, reserved, introvert that she was, where had the courage come from to venture here? From the sounds of it, they had been very prepared for the journey and intuitively, I knew that was Anna’s doing.

What was God doing with my children?

Was I at fault somehow for all this happening?

I rubbed my tired eyes. Opening them, I stared down at the lithe figure stretched out sleeping, trustingly across the fire from me.

Strangely, I felt my lips curl in a smile, despite the circumstances.

Earlier, when we’d made camp, I’d pulled my food portions out of my pack, and the memory of her face, and how it had looked as I gave her food, would be with me forever.

The look of overwhelmed gratitude had been so intense that it had been hard to stand up to. It was clear nothing had ever been given to this girl before, just like Dayar’is.

I’d managed to coax a smile out of her as I tossed her whether she wanted it or not, a second chocolate bar.

Oh, she very much had wanted it. So much so that she’d bitten her lip and repeated after me. ‘Pretty please may I have some more chocolate, please.’

It had been meant as a tease, but it had become something else entirely after I’d tossed her the second bar, which is when she’d given me the smile.

What a smile! Then, oh God, then, it had been sheer torture, as instead of gobbling it down like the first bar, she had sat there slowly, oh so slowly chewing it. I think I’d even heard her moan a few times.

Yes, I’d definitely heard her moan. I’d felt like moaning, just from watching the orgasmic radiance of her facial expressions.

I’d go without chocolate for the rest of my life if it meant keeping her in stock of orgasmic-inducing treats.
